Cardiff to Llandudno by Train

By Llandudno Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

This trip is Transport for Wales all the way, with one change at Chester. The first train runs from Cardiff Central to Chester, about three hours with 14 stops. The second is the direct Chester to Llandudno service, about 64 minutes more. With a wait of around 12 minutes at Chester, the journey came to about 4h 16m on a weekday.

Seven departures a day

This is a sparse route, so build the day around it. The connecting departures from Cardiff Central were at 05:19, 07:19, 09:23, 11:23, 13:23, 15:23 and 16:16, roughly every two hours until mid-afternoon. On a typical run only the 05:19 and 07:19 reach Llandudno before midday, and the 16:16, the last on this route, gets in at around half past eight in the evening. The spacing is uneven too: after two-hour gaps through the morning and early afternoon, the 15:23 and 16:16 are under an hour apart. One later train, the 17:22, reached Llandudno by changing at Llandudno Junction instead of Chester, and took about half an hour longer.

The 12-minute change at Chester is the link to protect. If the train up from Cardiff Central runs late and you miss it, the next direct Chester to Llandudno train is usually around an hour later, as that service runs about hourly through the day.

Other weekday routings from Cardiff change at Crewe, at around 4h 45m, or go through Birmingham New Street and take more than five hours.

Train or car

Driving the 195 miles via the A49 takes about 4h 18m, almost exactly the train’s time, so neither option saves you anything on the clock. The difference is that on the train the only thing to manage is that one connection at Chester.

The Chester train finishes at Llandudno station, leaving a nine-minute walk of 650 metres to Mostyn Street.
