Birmingham to Llandudno by Train

By Llandudno Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

The main route from Birmingham changes once, at Runcorn. West Midlands Trains and Avanti West Coast both run from Birmingham New Street to Runcorn in about 1h 23m, and there you pick up Transport for Wales for the 1h 32m run to Llandudno. That second train runs right through to Llandudno station, so there is no further change at Llandudno Junction. The whole journey took just over three hours on a weekday, with a change of around nine minutes.

Departure times

Trains left New Street at 34 minutes past the hour from 05:34 to 17:34, except in the seven o’clock hour, where the departure we found was a 07:51, also changing at Runcorn. The quickest journey on the weekday timetable took about 2h 47m.

Nine minutes at Runcorn is not much margin if the train from New Street runs late, so on a tight day pick a departure that leaves you an hour or two in hand at the Llandudno end.

Later in the day

The 17:34 was the last departure with the Runcorn change. For a later start, there were journeys at 18:07 and 19:07 with three changes, at Crewe, Chester and Llandudno Junction, taking about three hours. They are no slower on paper, but each of those three changes is another connection to make. Routes via Shrewsbury and Chester also appear on the weekday timetable, at around 3h 15m. Counting all of these, New Street had at least one departure for Llandudno in every hour from the 05:34 to the 19:07.

Arriving

The Runcorn train ends its run at Llandudno station; Mostyn Street is 650 metres away, around nine minutes on foot.

Driving the 140 miles on the M6 takes about 2h 32m, roughly half an hour less than the train from New Street.
